CR2 to SVG

Why convert CR2 to SVG?

The main difference: CR2 is an unprocessed sensor data format, while SVG is a vector format. SVG is supported almost everywhere; CR2 isn't. SVG can have a transparent background, CR2 can't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read CR2 (none (needs a RAW editor)). A SVG copy opens on every web browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A CR2 file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to SVG applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Supports transparent backgrounds

SVG can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Scales without blurring

SVG is made of shapes, not pixels, so a traced logo or icon stays razor-sharp at any size - from a tiny favicon to a large print or sign.

What is a CR2 (camera RAW) file?

CR2 is the camera RAW format of Canon - EOS DSLRs released between 2004 and 2018. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open a CR2 (camera RAW) file

Canon Digital Photo Professional opens CR2 files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert CR2 to JPG online.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) describes an image as shapes, lines and curves in XML code rather than a grid of pixels. That means an SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size - from a favicon to a billboard - and is often tiny in file size.

SVG is the go-to format for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, and for cut files used by Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters. It's not suited to photographs.

How to open an SVG file

Any web browser displays SVG files. To edit one, use Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly. To get a regular image, convert SVG to PNG.
