MRW to TGA

Why convert MRW to TGA?

The main difference: MRW is an unprocessed sensor data format, while TGA is a lossless format. TGA can have a transparent background, MRW can't.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A MRW file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to TGA applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Supports transparent backgrounds

TGA can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

What is an MRW (camera RAW) file?

MRW is the camera RAW format of Minolta - Konica Minolta DiMAGE and Dynax/Maxxum cameras. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open an MRW (camera RAW) file

Adobe Photoshop (Camera Raw) opens MRW files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert MRW to JPG online.

What is a TGA file?

TGA (Truevision Graphics Adapter, also called TARGA) is a raster format from 1984 that's still common in video games, 3D rendering and video production. It's simple, lossless and supports an alpha channel for transparency.

Game engines and 3D tools often export textures and render frames as TGA. Outside those workflows, few apps open it.

How to open a TGA file

Photoshop, GIMP, Blender, Unity and Unreal Engine open TGA files. Windows Photos and most browsers can't, so convert to PNG for a lossless copy that keeps the transparency.
