NEF to TIFF

Why convert NEF to TIFF?

The main difference: NEF is an unprocessed sensor data format, while TIFF is a lossless format. TIFF can have a transparent background, NEF can't.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A NEF file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to TIFF applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Supports transparent backgrounds

TIFF can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Crisp edges for editing and print

TIFF keeps sharp lines and text intact, which makes it the better choice for graphics, screenshots and anything you plan to print.

What is an NEF (camera RAW) file?

NEF is the camera RAW format of Nikon - Nikon DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless cameras. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open an NEF (camera RAW) file

Nikon NX Studio opens NEF files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert NEF to JPG online.

What is a TIFF file?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a high-quality format used in professional photography, printing, scanning and publishing. It's usually saved without lossy compression, so it keeps every detail - and produces large files.

TIFF can store layers, 16-bit color, multiple pages and transparency, which makes it a favorite of print shops and archives. For sharing online, it's far too heavy.

How to open a TIFF file

Windows Photos and Mac Preview open most TIFF files. Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP and Affinity Photo handle advanced ones with layers or 16-bit color. Browsers generally can't display TIFF, so convert to JPG or PNG to share.
