Why convert PDF to SVG?

The main difference: PDF is a document format, while SVG is a vector format.

Transparent areas stay transparent

PDF and SVG both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Scales without blurring

SVG is made of shapes, not pixels, so a traced logo or icon stays razor-sharp at any size - from a tiny favicon to a large print or sign.

What is a PDF file?

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 to make documents look identical on every screen and printer. A PDF can contain text, vector graphics and images across any number of pages.

It's the standard for forms, contracts, resumes, school assignments and anything you print or submit. Turning photos and scans into a PDF bundles them into one tidy, universally readable file.

How to open a PDF file

Every web browser opens PDFs, as do Mac Preview, the Files app on iPhone and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Mac and Android. To get pictures out of a PDF, convert its pages to JPG or PNG.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) describes an image as shapes, lines and curves in XML code rather than a grid of pixels. That means an SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size - from a favicon to a billboard - and is often tiny in file size.

SVG is the go-to format for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, and for cut files used by Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters. It's not suited to photographs.

How to open an SVG file

Any web browser displays SVG files. To edit one, use Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly. To get a regular image, convert SVG to PNG.
