How to Save a WebP Image as JPG or PNG

Downloaded an image and got a .webp file? Here's how to convert WebP to JPG or PNG online, in Chrome, on a Mac and on Windows - and why websites use WebP in the first place.

You right-click an image, save it, and end up with a .webp file that your photo editor, upload form or older software refuses to open. WebP is a modern web format - great for websites, awkward everywhere else. Converting it takes a few seconds.

Convert WebP to JPG online

  1. Open the WebP to JPG converter.
  2. Drop in your WebP files - up to 30 at a time.
  3. Press Convert and download.

Need transparency kept? Use WebP to PNG. Got an .avif file instead? That's WebP's newer cousin - use AVIF to JPG.

In Chrome or Edge

There's no built-in "Save as JPG" option. A simple workaround is to open the image in a new tab, take a screenshot of it, or copy it and paste into an editor - but that can reduce quality and size. Saving the WebP and converting it keeps the full resolution.

On a Mac

  1. Open the WebP file in Preview (macOS Big Sur and later support WebP).
  2. Choose File › Export.
  3. Pick JPEG or PNG and save.

On Windows

Windows 10 and 11 can open WebP in the Photos app and in Paint:

  1. Open the file in Paint.
  2. Choose File › Save as › JPEG picture.

Paint drops any transparency and has no quality control, so for logos or batches the online converter is the better option.

Why websites use WebP

WebP files are typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG and much smaller than PNG, while supporting transparency and animation. Smaller images mean faster pages, which matters for visitors and for Google's Core Web Vitals. Every current browser supports WebP - it's just desktop software and upload forms that lag behind.

Should you keep the WebP?

If you're putting the image back on a website, keep it as WebP or convert your other images to WebP too with JPG to WebP. If you're printing, editing, emailing or uploading it to a form, convert it to JPG or PNG.

FAQ

Common questions

Many websites serve images as WebP because they're 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, so pages load faster. When you right-click and save, you get the file the site sent: a WebP.
