Why convert PNG to GIF?

PNG and GIF are both lossless formats. GIF is the usual choice for simple animations and small graphics (256 colors max).

Transparent areas stay transparent

PNG and GIF both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Where GIF works best

GIF is ideal for simple animations and small graphics (256 colors max). Converting gives you a file that works in the apps and websites that ask for GIF.

What is a PNG file?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It stores every pixel exactly, so text, logos and sharp edges stay perfectly crisp however often you save the file.

PNG supports full transparency, which makes it the standard format for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics placed on top of other designs. For photos, though, PNG files are several times larger than JPG.

How to open a PNG file

PNG opens everywhere: Windows Photos, Mac Preview, iPhone and Android galleries and every web browser. Editors like Photoshop, GIMP, Figma and Canva keep the transparency intact.

What is a GIF file?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates back to 1987 and is best known for short, looping animations and reaction images. It's lossless but limited to 256 colors per frame, so photos look grainy and banded.

GIF supports simple on/off transparency (no soft edges). For animations, modern formats like WebP and MP4 give far better quality at a fraction of the size, but GIF still plays everywhere.

How to open a GIF file

Any web browser plays animated GIFs - drag the file into a browser window. Windows Photos and Mac Preview open them too (Preview shows the frames side by side). Messaging apps and social networks accept GIFs directly.
