Why convert PPM to PDF?

The main difference: PPM is a lossless format, while PDF is a document format. PDF is supported almost everywhere; PPM isn't. PDF can have a transparent background, PPM can't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read PPM (none). A PDF copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Supports transparent backgrounds

PDF can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

One file to print, email or submit

A PDF looks identical on every screen and printer, and it's the format most application forms, schools and offices want.

What is a PPM / PNM file?

PPM, PGM, PBM and PNM are the Netpbm formats: deliberately simple, uncompressed image files from the 1980s. They store pixels as plain numbers, which makes them easy for programs to read and write.

You'll mostly meet them in scientific computing, image-processing scripts and developer tools - rarely in everyday use.

How to open a PPM / PNM file

GIMP, IrfanView, XnView and Photoshop open Netpbm files, as do Linux image viewers. Windows Photos and browsers can't, so convert to PNG for a lossless, much smaller copy.

What is a PDF file?

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 to make documents look identical on every screen and printer. A PDF can contain text, vector graphics and images across any number of pages.

It's the standard for forms, contracts, resumes, school assignments and anything you print or submit. Turning photos and scans into a PDF bundles them into one tidy, universally readable file.

How to open a PDF file

Every web browser opens PDFs, as do Mac Preview, the Files app on iPhone and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Mac and Android. To get pictures out of a PDF, convert its pages to JPG or PNG.
