Photoshop PSD to PostScript

Why convert PSD to PostScript?

The main difference: PSD is a lossless format, while PostScript is a vector format. PSD can have a transparent background, PostScript can't.

Where PostScript works best

PostScript is ideal for print jobs and printer workflows. Converting gives you a file that works in the apps and websites that ask for PostScript.

What is a Photoshop PSD file?

PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native file format. It saves everything you're working on - layers, masks, text, adjustment layers and effects - so you can keep editing later.

PSD files are often huge and can only be fully edited in Photoshop or compatible apps. To share or post the design, you need a flattened image like JPG or PNG.

How to open a Photoshop PSD file

Adobe Photoshop opens PSD files fully. Photopea (free, in the browser), GIMP and Affinity Photo open most of them; Mac Preview and Quick Look show a flattened preview. Converting gives you the final image without needing Photoshop.

What is a PostScript file?

PostScript (.ps) is Adobe's page description language from 1984 - the language many professional printers speak. A .ps file describes a whole page or document as instructions for drawing text, shapes and images.

PostScript files mostly come from print workflows and "print to file" output. PDF was built on the same ideas and has replaced it for everyday use.

How to open a PostScript file

Ghostscript and GSview open PostScript files on Windows; macOS Preview handled them up to Monterey. Adobe Acrobat Distiller converts them to PDF. Converting to PDF or PNG is the easiest way to view one today.
