RAW to JPG

Why convert RAW to JPG?

The main difference: RAW is an unprocessed sensor data format, while JPG is a lossy format. JPG is supported almost everywhere; RAW isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read RAW (none (needs a RAW editor)). A JPG copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A RAW file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to JPG applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Smaller files, faster uploads

JPG compresses images with lossy compression, so your file typically ends up a fraction of the RAW size - quicker to attach to an email, upload to a form or load on a web page.

What is an RAW (camera RAW) file?

RAW is the camera RAW format of Panasonic and Leica - several older Panasonic and Leica compact cameras. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open an RAW (camera RAW) file

SILKYPIX opens RAW files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert RAW to JPG online.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.
