Why convert XCF to PDF?

The main difference: XCF is a lossless format, while PDF is a document format. PDF is supported almost everywhere; XCF isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read XCF (none (needs GIMP)). A PDF copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Transparent areas stay transparent

XCF and PDF both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

One file to print, email or submit

A PDF looks identical on every screen and printer, and it's the format most application forms, schools and offices want.

What is a GIMP XCF file?

XCF is GIMP's native file format - the free, open-source alternative to Photoshop's PSD. It keeps layers, channels, paths, text and selections so you can continue editing later.

Like PSD, XCF is a working file rather than a sharing format: to post or send the design you need a flattened JPG or PNG.

How to open a GIMP XCF file

GIMP (free for Windows, Mac and Linux) opens XCF files. Some viewers such as XnView show a flattened preview. Converting gives you the finished image without installing GIMP.

What is a PDF file?

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 to make documents look identical on every screen and printer. A PDF can contain text, vector graphics and images across any number of pages.

It's the standard for forms, contracts, resumes, school assignments and anything you print or submit. Turning photos and scans into a PDF bundles them into one tidy, universally readable file.

How to open a PDF file

Every web browser opens PDFs, as do Mac Preview, the Files app on iPhone and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Mac and Android. To get pictures out of a PDF, convert its pages to JPG or PNG.
