AVIF to ICNS

Why convert AVIF to ICNS?

The main difference: AVIF is a lossy or lossless format, while ICNS is a lossless format.

Transparent areas stay transparent

AVIF and ICNS both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Where ICNS works best

ICNS is ideal for macOS app icons. Converting gives you a file that works in the apps and websites that ask for ICNS.

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media - Google, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix and others. It typically produces smaller files than both JPG and WebP at the same visual quality.

AVIF supports transparency, HDR and wide color, which makes it a favorite for fast websites. Support outside browsers is still patchy, so downloaded AVIF files often need converting.

How to open an AVIF file

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ display AVIF. Windows 11 opens it in Photos once the free AV1 Video Extension is installed; macOS Ventura and later preview it. For editors and forms that refuse it, convert to JPG or PNG.

What is an ICNS file?

ICNS is Apple's icon format for macOS apps. Like ICO on Windows, one file bundles the same icon in several sizes - from 16 × 16 up to 1024 × 1024 pixels - so it looks crisp in the Dock, Finder and on Retina displays.

Developers need ICNS when packaging a Mac application. For websites and Windows, use ICO or PNG instead.

How to open an ICNS file

Mac Preview opens ICNS files and shows every size inside. Xcode and icon tools create them. Windows can't open ICNS without extra software - convert it to PNG to view it there.
