AVIF to SVG

Why convert AVIF to SVG?

The main difference: AVIF is a lossy or lossless format, while SVG is a vector format. SVG is supported almost everywhere; AVIF isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read AVIF (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+; many apps can't open it yet). A SVG copy opens on every web browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Transparent areas stay transparent

AVIF and SVG both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Scales without blurring

SVG is made of shapes, not pixels, so a traced logo or icon stays razor-sharp at any size - from a tiny favicon to a large print or sign.

What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media - Google, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix and others. It typically produces smaller files than both JPG and WebP at the same visual quality.

AVIF supports transparency, HDR and wide color, which makes it a favorite for fast websites. Support outside browsers is still patchy, so downloaded AVIF files often need converting.

How to open an AVIF file

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ display AVIF. Windows 11 opens it in Photos once the free AV1 Video Extension is installed; macOS Ventura and later preview it. For editors and forms that refuse it, convert to JPG or PNG.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) describes an image as shapes, lines and curves in XML code rather than a grid of pixels. That means an SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size - from a favicon to a billboard - and is often tiny in file size.

SVG is the go-to format for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, and for cut files used by Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters. It's not suited to photographs.

How to open an SVG file

Any web browser displays SVG files. To edit one, use Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly. To get a regular image, convert SVG to PNG.
