DCR to WebP

Why convert DCR to WebP?

The main difference: DCR is an unprocessed sensor data format, while WebP is a lossy or lossless format. WebP can have a transparent background, DCR can't.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A DCR file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to WebP applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Smaller files, faster uploads

WebP supports lossy compression, so your file typically ends up a fraction of the DCR size - quicker to attach to an email, upload to a form or load on a web page.

Supports transparent backgrounds

WebP can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Lighter images for your website

At the same visual quality, WebP files are noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG. Lighter images mean faster pages, better Core Web Vitals and a small boost for SEO.

What is a DCR (camera RAW) file?

DCR is the camera RAW format of Kodak - professional DCS digital cameras. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open a DCR (camera RAW) file

Adobe Photoshop (Camera Raw) opens DCR files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert DCR to JPG online.

What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010 to make websites load faster. It can compress photos lossily like JPG, or graphics losslessly like PNG - usually with 25-35% smaller files - and it supports transparency and animation too.

That's why so many images you save from websites, including Google Images, arrive as .webp files. Browsers love them; older software and many upload forms still don't.

How to open a WebP file

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP directly - drag the file into a browser window. Windows 10/11 Photos and Paint and Mac Preview (Big Sur and later) open it as well. If an app or website rejects it, convert it to JPG or PNG.
