Why convert EPS to PDF?

The main difference: EPS is a vector format, while PDF is a document format. PDF is supported almost everywhere; EPS isn't. PDF can have a transparent background, EPS can't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read EPS (none (needs a design app)). A PDF copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Supports transparent backgrounds

PDF can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

One file to print, email or submit

A PDF looks identical on every screen and printer, and it's the format most application forms, schools and offices want.

What is an EPS file?

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a graphics format from Adobe used for decades in professional printing, logos and stock illustrations. It can hold vector artwork, images and text, ready for high-end printers.

EPS has largely been replaced by PDF and SVG, but print shops, sign makers and older logo packages still use it.

How to open an EPS file

Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop open EPS files; on a Mac, Preview converts them to PDF for viewing. Inkscape (free) imports many EPS files. Converting to PNG, JPG or SVG makes the artwork usable anywhere.

What is a PDF file?

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 to make documents look identical on every screen and printer. A PDF can contain text, vector graphics and images across any number of pages.

It's the standard for forms, contracts, resumes, school assignments and anything you print or submit. Turning photos and scans into a PDF bundles them into one tidy, universally readable file.

How to open a PDF file

Every web browser opens PDFs, as do Mac Preview, the Files app on iPhone and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Mac and Android. To get pictures out of a PDF, convert its pages to JPG or PNG.
