SVG to JPEG XL

Why convert SVG to JPEG XL?

The main difference: SVG is a vector format, while JPEG XL is a lossy or lossless format.

Transparent areas stay transparent

SVG and JPEG XL both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Lighter images for your website

At the same visual quality, JPEG XL files are noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG. Lighter images mean faster pages, better Core Web Vitals and a small boost for SEO.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) describes an image as shapes, lines and curves in XML code rather than a grid of pixels. That means an SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size - from a favicon to a billboard - and is often tiny in file size.

SVG is the go-to format for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, and for cut files used by Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters. It's not suited to photographs.

How to open an SVG file

Any web browser displays SVG files. To edit one, use Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly. To get a regular image, convert SVG to PNG.

What is a JPEG XL file?

JPEG XL is a next-generation image format standardized in 2022 as a successor to JPG. It compresses better than JPG and WebP, supports transparency, HDR and animation, and can losslessly repack existing JPGs about 20% smaller.

Adoption is growing - Apple supports it across iPhone, iPad and Mac, and some cameras and photo apps can save it - but many browsers and programs can't open it yet.

How to open a JPEG XL file

Safari 17+, macOS Sonoma and iOS 17 and later open JPEG XL. Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo and darktable support it. On Windows, and in Chrome, convert it to JPG or PNG to view it.
