SVG to TGA

Why convert SVG to TGA?

The main difference: SVG is a vector format, while TGA is a lossless format.

Transparent areas stay transparent

SVG and TGA both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Where TGA works best

TGA is ideal for game textures and video production. Converting gives you a file that works in the apps and websites that ask for TGA.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) describes an image as shapes, lines and curves in XML code rather than a grid of pixels. That means an SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size - from a favicon to a billboard - and is often tiny in file size.

SVG is the go-to format for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, and for cut files used by Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters. It's not suited to photographs.

How to open an SVG file

Any web browser displays SVG files. To edit one, use Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly. To get a regular image, convert SVG to PNG.

What is a TGA file?

TGA (Truevision Graphics Adapter, also called TARGA) is a raster format from 1984 that's still common in video games, 3D rendering and video production. It's simple, lossless and supports an alpha channel for transparency.

Game engines and 3D tools often export textures and render frames as TGA. Outside those workflows, few apps open it.

How to open a TGA file

Photoshop, GIMP, Blender, Unity and Unreal Engine open TGA files. Windows Photos and most browsers can't, so convert to PNG for a lossless copy that keeps the transparency.
