Why convert WebP to PDF?

The main difference: WebP is a lossy or lossless format, while PDF is a document format. PDF is supported almost everywhere; WebP isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read WebP (all modern browsers; some older apps and upload forms don't accept it). A PDF copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Transparent areas stay transparent

WebP and PDF both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

One file to print, email or submit

A PDF looks identical on every screen and printer, and it's the format most application forms, schools and offices want.

What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010 to make websites load faster. It can compress photos lossily like JPG, or graphics losslessly like PNG - usually with 25-35% smaller files - and it supports transparency and animation too.

That's why so many images you save from websites, including Google Images, arrive as .webp files. Browsers love them; older software and many upload forms still don't.

How to open a WebP file

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP directly - drag the file into a browser window. Windows 10/11 Photos and Paint and Mac Preview (Big Sur and later) open it as well. If an app or website rejects it, convert it to JPG or PNG.

What is a PDF file?

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 to make documents look identical on every screen and printer. A PDF can contain text, vector graphics and images across any number of pages.

It's the standard for forms, contracts, resumes, school assignments and anything you print or submit. Turning photos and scans into a PDF bundles them into one tidy, universally readable file.

How to open a PDF file

Every web browser opens PDFs, as do Mac Preview, the Files app on iPhone and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Mac and Android. To get pictures out of a PDF, convert its pages to JPG or PNG.
