WebP to TIFF

Why convert WebP to TIFF?

The main difference: WebP is a lossy or lossless format, while TIFF is a lossless format.

Transparent areas stay transparent

WebP and TIFF both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Crisp edges for editing and print

TIFF keeps sharp lines and text intact, which makes it the better choice for graphics, screenshots and anything you plan to print.

What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010 to make websites load faster. It can compress photos lossily like JPG, or graphics losslessly like PNG - usually with 25-35% smaller files - and it supports transparency and animation too.

That's why so many images you save from websites, including Google Images, arrive as .webp files. Browsers love them; older software and many upload forms still don't.

How to open a WebP file

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP directly - drag the file into a browser window. Windows 10/11 Photos and Paint and Mac Preview (Big Sur and later) open it as well. If an app or website rejects it, convert it to JPG or PNG.

What is a TIFF file?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a high-quality format used in professional photography, printing, scanning and publishing. It's usually saved without lossy compression, so it keeps every detail - and produces large files.

TIFF can store layers, 16-bit color, multiple pages and transparency, which makes it a favorite of print shops and archives. For sharing online, it's far too heavy.

How to open a TIFF file

Windows Photos and Mac Preview open most TIFF files. Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP and Affinity Photo handle advanced ones with layers or 16-bit color. Browsers generally can't display TIFF, so convert to JPG or PNG to share.
