X3F to ICO

Why convert X3F to ICO?

The main difference: X3F is an unprocessed sensor data format, while ICO is a lossless format. ICO can have a transparent background, X3F can't.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A X3F file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to ICO applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Supports transparent backgrounds

ICO can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Create a favicon or app icon

ICO is the icon format every browser and Windows understands. Convert a square X3F to get a favicon for your site or an icon for a desktop shortcut.

What is an X3F (camera RAW) file?

X3F is the camera RAW format of Sigma - Sigma cameras with the Foveon sensor. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open an X3F (camera RAW) file

Sigma Photo Pro opens X3F files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert X3F to JPG online.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the icon format of Microsoft Windows and the classic format for website favicons - the little image in a browser tab. One ICO file can hold several sizes (16 × 16, 32 × 32, 48 × 48 and more), so the icon looks sharp everywhere.

ICO supports transparency, so icons can have rounded or irregular shapes. Modern sites often add PNG and SVG favicons too, but favicon.ico is still the universal fallback.

How to open an ICO file

Windows shows ICO files in File Explorer and opens them in Photos; Mac Preview opens them too. GIMP and online editors can edit them. To make one, convert a square PNG - or use the Favicon Generator for a complete set.
