X3F to PNG

Why convert X3F to PNG?

The main difference: X3F is an unprocessed sensor data format, while PNG is a lossless format. PNG is supported almost everywhere; X3F isn't. PNG can have a transparent background, X3F can't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read X3F (none (needs a RAW editor)). A PNG copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Develop RAW into a ready-to-use photo

A X3F file holds the raw readings from the camera sensor, not a finished picture. Converting it to PNG applies the camera's colors and gives you a normal photo you can share, print or post right away.

Supports transparent backgrounds

PNG can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Crisp edges for editing and print

PNG keeps sharp lines and text intact, which makes it the better choice for graphics, screenshots and anything you plan to print.

What is an X3F (camera RAW) file?

X3F is the camera RAW format of Sigma - Sigma cameras with the Foveon sensor. Instead of a finished photo, a RAW file stores the unprocessed data straight from the camera's sensor.

That gives photographers maximum room to adjust exposure, white balance and color afterwards, but RAW files are large (often 20-60 MB) and need special software to view. Converting to JPG produces a normal photo you can share right away.

How to open an X3F (camera RAW) file

Sigma Photo Pro opens X3F files, and Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop (Camera Raw), Capture One, darktable and RawTherapee support them too. Mac Photos and Preview open most RAW formats; on Windows, the free Raw Image Extension adds support to the Photos app. Without any of these, convert X3F to JPG online.

What is a PNG file?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It stores every pixel exactly, so text, logos and sharp edges stay perfectly crisp however often you save the file.

PNG supports full transparency, which makes it the standard format for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics placed on top of other designs. For photos, though, PNG files are several times larger than JPG.

How to open a PNG file

PNG opens everywhere: Windows Photos, Mac Preview, iPhone and Android galleries and every web browser. Editors like Photoshop, GIMP, Figma and Canva keep the transparency intact.
