HEIC to GIF

Why convert HEIC to GIF?

The main difference: HEIC is a lossy format, while GIF is a lossless format. GIF is supported almost everywhere; HEIC isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read HEIC (Safari only; Windows needs an extension). A GIF copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Stop losing quality on every save

A HEIC is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. GIF is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Transparent areas stay transparent

HEIC and GIF both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

What is an HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's Apple's flavor of the HEIF standard, compressed with the same HEVC technology used for 4K video.

A HEIC photo takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality and can store extras like Live Photo frames and depth data. The catch is compatibility: Windows, many Android apps and most upload forms can't open it.

How to open an HEIC file

iPhone, iPad and Mac open HEIC natively. On Windows 10 or 11, install the free HEIF Image Extensions (and, on some PCs, the HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store. Recent Android phones can view HEIC in their gallery. Anywhere else, convert it to JPG.

What is a GIF file?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates back to 1987 and is best known for short, looping animations and reaction images. It's lossless but limited to 256 colors per frame, so photos look grainy and banded.

GIF supports simple on/off transparency (no soft edges). For animations, modern formats like WebP and MP4 give far better quality at a fraction of the size, but GIF still plays everywhere.

How to open a GIF file

Any web browser plays animated GIFs - drag the file into a browser window. Windows Photos and Mac Preview open them too (Preview shows the frames side by side). Messaging apps and social networks accept GIFs directly.
