HEIC to ICO

Why convert HEIC to ICO?

The main difference: HEIC is a lossy format, while ICO is a lossless format.

Stop losing quality on every save

A HEIC is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. ICO is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Transparent areas stay transparent

HEIC and ICO both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Create a favicon or app icon

ICO is the icon format every browser and Windows understands. Convert a square HEIC to get a favicon for your site or an icon for a desktop shortcut.

What is an HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's Apple's flavor of the HEIF standard, compressed with the same HEVC technology used for 4K video.

A HEIC photo takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality and can store extras like Live Photo frames and depth data. The catch is compatibility: Windows, many Android apps and most upload forms can't open it.

How to open an HEIC file

iPhone, iPad and Mac open HEIC natively. On Windows 10 or 11, install the free HEIF Image Extensions (and, on some PCs, the HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store. Recent Android phones can view HEIC in their gallery. Anywhere else, convert it to JPG.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the icon format of Microsoft Windows and the classic format for website favicons - the little image in a browser tab. One ICO file can hold several sizes (16 × 16, 32 × 32, 48 × 48 and more), so the icon looks sharp everywhere.

ICO supports transparency, so icons can have rounded or irregular shapes. Modern sites often add PNG and SVG favicons too, but favicon.ico is still the universal fallback.

How to open an ICO file

Windows shows ICO files in File Explorer and opens them in Photos; Mac Preview opens them too. GIMP and online editors can edit them. To make one, convert a square PNG - or use the Favicon Generator for a complete set.
