HEIC to PNG

Why convert HEIC to PNG?

The main difference: HEIC is a lossy format, while PNG is a lossless format. PNG is supported almost everywhere; HEIC isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read HEIC (Safari only; Windows needs an extension). A PNG copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Stop losing quality on every save

A HEIC is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. PNG is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Transparent areas stay transparent

HEIC and PNG both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Crisp edges for editing and print

PNG keeps sharp lines and text intact, which makes it the better choice for graphics, screenshots and anything you plan to print.

What is an HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's Apple's flavor of the HEIF standard, compressed with the same HEVC technology used for 4K video.

A HEIC photo takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality and can store extras like Live Photo frames and depth data. The catch is compatibility: Windows, many Android apps and most upload forms can't open it.

How to open an HEIC file

iPhone, iPad and Mac open HEIC natively. On Windows 10 or 11, install the free HEIF Image Extensions (and, on some PCs, the HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store. Recent Android phones can view HEIC in their gallery. Anywhere else, convert it to JPG.

What is a PNG file?

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It stores every pixel exactly, so text, logos and sharp edges stay perfectly crisp however often you save the file.

PNG supports full transparency, which makes it the standard format for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics placed on top of other designs. For photos, though, PNG files are several times larger than JPG.

How to open a PNG file

PNG opens everywhere: Windows Photos, Mac Preview, iPhone and Android galleries and every web browser. Editors like Photoshop, GIMP, Figma and Canva keep the transparency intact.
