Why convert HEIC to PDF?

The main difference: HEIC is a lossy format, while PDF is a document format. PDF is supported almost everywhere; HEIC isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read HEIC (Safari only; Windows needs an extension). A PDF copy opens on any phone, tablet, computer or browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Transparent areas stay transparent

HEIC and PDF both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

One file to print, email or submit

A PDF looks identical on every screen and printer, and it's the format most application forms, schools and offices want.

What is an HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's Apple's flavor of the HEIF standard, compressed with the same HEVC technology used for 4K video.

A HEIC photo takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality and can store extras like Live Photo frames and depth data. The catch is compatibility: Windows, many Android apps and most upload forms can't open it.

How to open an HEIC file

iPhone, iPad and Mac open HEIC natively. On Windows 10 or 11, install the free HEIF Image Extensions (and, on some PCs, the HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store. Recent Android phones can view HEIC in their gallery. Anywhere else, convert it to JPG.

What is a PDF file?

PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 to make documents look identical on every screen and printer. A PDF can contain text, vector graphics and images across any number of pages.

It's the standard for forms, contracts, resumes, school assignments and anything you print or submit. Turning photos and scans into a PDF bundles them into one tidy, universally readable file.

How to open a PDF file

Every web browser opens PDFs, as do Mac Preview, the Files app on iPhone and the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows, Mac and Android. To get pictures out of a PDF, convert its pages to JPG or PNG.
