HEIC to SVG

Why convert HEIC to SVG?

The main difference: HEIC is a lossy format, while SVG is a vector format. SVG is supported almost everywhere; HEIC isn't.

Works on every device

Plenty of apps and websites can't read HEIC (Safari only; Windows needs an extension). A SVG copy opens on every web browser, so you can view, upload or send the picture without hunting for special software.

Transparent areas stay transparent

HEIC and SVG both handle transparency, so anything see-through in the original is still see-through after conversion.

Scales without blurring

SVG is made of shapes, not pixels, so a traced logo or icon stays razor-sharp at any size - from a tiny favicon to a large print or sign.

What is an HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It's Apple's flavor of the HEIF standard, compressed with the same HEVC technology used for 4K video.

A HEIC photo takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality and can store extras like Live Photo frames and depth data. The catch is compatibility: Windows, many Android apps and most upload forms can't open it.

How to open an HEIC file

iPhone, iPad and Mac open HEIC natively. On Windows 10 or 11, install the free HEIF Image Extensions (and, on some PCs, the HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store. Recent Android phones can view HEIC in their gallery. Anywhere else, convert it to JPG.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) describes an image as shapes, lines and curves in XML code rather than a grid of pixels. That means an SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size - from a favicon to a billboard - and is often tiny in file size.

SVG is the go-to format for logos, icons and illustrations on the web, and for cut files used by Cricut, Silhouette and laser cutters. It's not suited to photographs.

How to open an SVG file

Any web browser displays SVG files. To edit one, use Inkscape (free), Adobe Illustrator, Figma or Affinity Designer. Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio import SVG directly. To get a regular image, convert SVG to PNG.
