Why convert JPG to GIF?

The main difference: JPG is a lossy format, while GIF is a lossless format. GIF can have a transparent background, JPG can't.

Stop losing quality on every save

A JPG is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. GIF is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Supports transparent backgrounds

GIF can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.

What is a GIF file?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) dates back to 1987 and is best known for short, looping animations and reaction images. It's lossless but limited to 256 colors per frame, so photos look grainy and banded.

GIF supports simple on/off transparency (no soft edges). For animations, modern formats like WebP and MP4 give far better quality at a fraction of the size, but GIF still plays everywhere.

How to open a GIF file

Any web browser plays animated GIFs - drag the file into a browser window. Windows Photos and Mac Preview open them too (Preview shows the frames side by side). Messaging apps and social networks accept GIFs directly.
