JPG to ICO

Why convert JPG to ICO?

The main difference: JPG is a lossy format, while ICO is a lossless format. ICO can have a transparent background, JPG can't.

Stop losing quality on every save

A JPG is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. ICO is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Supports transparent backgrounds

ICO can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Create a favicon or app icon

ICO is the icon format every browser and Windows understands. Convert a square JPG to get a favicon for your site or an icon for a desktop shortcut.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the icon format of Microsoft Windows and the classic format for website favicons - the little image in a browser tab. One ICO file can hold several sizes (16 × 16, 32 × 32, 48 × 48 and more), so the icon looks sharp everywhere.

ICO supports transparency, so icons can have rounded or irregular shapes. Modern sites often add PNG and SVG favicons too, but favicon.ico is still the universal fallback.

How to open an ICO file

Windows shows ICO files in File Explorer and opens them in Photos; Mac Preview opens them too. GIMP and online editors can edit them. To make one, convert a square PNG - or use the Favicon Generator for a complete set.
