JPG to TIFF

Why convert JPG to TIFF?

The main difference: JPG is a lossy format, while TIFF is a lossless format. TIFF can have a transparent background, JPG can't.

Stop losing quality on every save

A JPG is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. TIFF is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Supports transparent backgrounds

TIFF can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

Crisp edges for editing and print

TIFF keeps sharp lines and text intact, which makes it the better choice for graphics, screenshots and anything you plan to print.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.

What is a TIFF file?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a high-quality format used in professional photography, printing, scanning and publishing. It's usually saved without lossy compression, so it keeps every detail - and produces large files.

TIFF can store layers, 16-bit color, multiple pages and transparency, which makes it a favorite of print shops and archives. For sharing online, it's far too heavy.

How to open a TIFF file

Windows Photos and Mac Preview open most TIFF files. Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP and Affinity Photo handle advanced ones with layers or 16-bit color. Browsers generally can't display TIFF, so convert to JPG or PNG to share.
