Why convert JPG to PostScript?

The main difference: JPG is a lossy format, while PostScript is a vector format.

Where PostScript works best

PostScript is ideal for print jobs and printer workflows. Converting gives you a file that works in the apps and websites that ask for PostScript.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.

What is a PostScript file?

PostScript (.ps) is Adobe's page description language from 1984 - the language many professional printers speak. A .ps file describes a whole page or document as instructions for drawing text, shapes and images.

PostScript files mostly come from print workflows and "print to file" output. PDF was built on the same ideas and has replaced it for everyday use.

How to open a PostScript file

Ghostscript and GSview open PostScript files on Windows; macOS Preview handled them up to Monterey. Adobe Acrobat Distiller converts them to PDF. Converting to PDF or PNG is the easiest way to view one today.
