Why convert JPG to PSD?

The main difference: JPG is a lossy format, while PSD is a lossless format. PSD can have a transparent background, JPG can't.

Stop losing quality on every save

A JPG is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. PSD is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Supports transparent backgrounds

PSD can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.

What is a Photoshop PSD file?

PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native file format. It saves everything you're working on - layers, masks, text, adjustment layers and effects - so you can keep editing later.

PSD files are often huge and can only be fully edited in Photoshop or compatible apps. To share or post the design, you need a flattened image like JPG or PNG.

How to open a Photoshop PSD file

Adobe Photoshop opens PSD files fully. Photopea (free, in the browser), GIMP and Affinity Photo open most of them; Mac Preview and Quick Look show a flattened preview. Converting gives you the final image without needing Photoshop.
