Why convert JPG to ICNS?

The main difference: JPG is a lossy format, while ICNS is a lossless format. ICNS can have a transparent background, JPG can't.

Stop losing quality on every save

A JPG is re-compressed each time you edit and save it, and a little detail goes every time. ICNS is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly as it is, however many times you edit it.

Supports transparent backgrounds

ICNS can hold a transparent background. Convert your image first, then cut out the background or place it on top of other designs.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it in 1992) is the most widely used photo format in the world. Phones, cameras, websites, email and social networks all handle it.

JPG uses lossy compression: it discards fine detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos 5-10 times smaller than an uncompressed copy. The trade-off is that every re-save loses a little more detail, and it can't store a transparent background.

How to open a JPG file

Every device opens JPG files out of the box: Photos on Windows and Mac, the Photos or Gallery app on iPhone and Android, and any web browser. To edit one, use Photoshop, GIMP, Canva or the free tools on ConvertPixels.

What is an ICNS file?

ICNS is Apple's icon format for macOS apps. Like ICO on Windows, one file bundles the same icon in several sizes - from 16 × 16 up to 1024 × 1024 pixels - so it looks crisp in the Dock, Finder and on Retina displays.

Developers need ICNS when packaging a Mac application. For websites and Windows, use ICO or PNG instead.

How to open an ICNS file

Mac Preview opens ICNS files and shows every size inside. Xcode and icon tools create them. Windows can't open ICNS without extra software - convert it to PNG to view it there.
